What is Cold Brew?

If you’ve started to wonder what all the fuss is about when it comes to cold brew coffee, you’re not alone. Cold-brew has started to take over the coffee landscape, with many coffee shops offering different variations. There’s nothing magic about this drink — in fact, it’s as simple as its name suggests. Cold-brew is essentially made by soaking coffee grounds in cold water for 12 to 24 hours (some people just put the ground in the water directly, others use cheesecloth), and then straining the concentrate out.

Benefits of Cold Brew

The biggest benefit of cold brew is its acidity level. As one study points out, cold brew is almost 67% less acidic than hot coffee, which means it’s better for your teeth as well as your stomach. Definitely good for those who have sensitive tummies!

Another benefit of cold brew (and the reason it lasts so long in the fridge) is that because it’s never been heated. Its chemistry doesn’t change and so its flavor doesn’t either. Anyone who’s tried to drink day-old hot brewed coffee knows that there’s a distinct flavor change once the coffee cools down and sits in the fridge. With cold brew, that doesn’t happen!

Cold brew is also a weight loss assistant thanks to its caffeine content. How? By drinking a cup of cold brew following a workout, you’ll increase your or after-burn effect. The after-burn effect is the term used to describe the body’s ability to continue burning calories after exercise.

Lastly, cold brew is good for the heart! By consuming 15 to 25 ounces of coffee daily, you’re able to lower your risk of contracting heart disease by 15%. In addition, cold brew contains compounds that can reduce your risk of heart disease, including magnesium, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory agents.
